Is It A Senior Moment or B12 Deficiency?

Before you jokingly claim that you are experiencing a senior moment, consider that you could be actually experiencing a Vitamin B12 deficiency.  A B12 deficiency will cause you to have difficulty focusing and remembering people, things and events.

B12 deficiency is common, especially in Seniors as well as those with digestive disorders.  Vegetarians are also more likely to have a B12 deficiency.  Deficiency symptoms include abnormal walk or balance issues, memory loss, hallucinations, eye/vision disorders, anemia and digestive disorders.

Other symptoms that could be indicative of a B12 deficiency include:

Low energy levels

The signs of vitamin B12 deficiency include fatigue and weakness. B12 is essential for protein metabolism and healthy red blood cells, and without an adequate amount in your system, you may feel sluggish and tired. Assess your dizziness — such as a feeling of losing balance or faintness — when you stand up or exert yourself physically.

Loss of ability to concentrate and remember details

B12 is required for proper neurological function. You may begin to forget more than usual and have trouble concentrating for more than a few minutes.

B12 Deficiency can cause Numbness and Tingling

Check for physical and neurological symptoms. Observe any abnormal sensations on your hands and feet such as numbness and tingling. Look out for either diarrhea or constipation. Pay attention to your breathing during any form of exercise; you could also experience shortness of breath, according to Medline Plus.

B12 Deficiency Can Cause Impaired Vision

Another symptom of vitamin B12 deficiency is blurred or disturbed vision.

When an untreated, a B12 deficiency can result in nervous system damage to the optic nerve that leads to your eyes. This nervous system damage could impair your vision.

How does Vitamin B12 Deficiency affect you

Primary Source of B12

Meat is the primary source of B12 but can gotten from animal by products.  Supplements are helpful as well.  If taking a supplement, doses of 25-100 mcg per day have been used to maintain the B12 vitamin levels in older people.

If you suspect a B12 deficiency, or any other medical condition, check with your health care professional.  Doctors can easily test for this deficiency.  Please don’t assume that new health conditions are just a sign of growing old.  Tell your doctor and get help.
